6x3m 바닥 위에 십만개의 호치케스(스테이플러) 심으로 세운 도시. 온전한 호치케스 심 하나가 대략 12cm 정도가 된다고 한다. 심의 길이를 조절해 가면서 대리석 바닥 위에 점착제도 없이 호치케스 심 그대로를 세워 만든 피터 루트(Peter Root)의 Ephemicropolis 2010. 약 40시간 동안을 공들여 세운 피터의 도시. 이 도시는 안전할까?

최근 우리는 지진, 해일, 홍수…. 등 자연재해 앞에서 무력하게 무너지는 문명을 목격하고 있다. 마치 피터의 도시처럼 말이다. 가벼운 바람과 나뭇잎 하나 만으로도 도시는 산산조각 날 수 있다. 작가는 Ephemicropolis 2010을 통해 도시의 종말을 말하고 있다.

연이은 재난과 재해 속에서 지구인 모두가 불안해하고 있는 지금, 우리는 어떤 건축, 어떤 도시를 준비해야할까?

Stacks of staples were broken into varying sizes from full stacks about 12cm high down to single staples. These stacks were then stood up and arranged over a period of 40 hours. Each stack of staples is free-standing, without glue or magnets to support them. The whole installation is highly vulnerable to micro-apocalyptic events; a light breeze, or a falling leaf would cause the city to crumble.

This pioneering new development explores sustainable technologies and the planning principals to create a desert community that will be carbon neutral and zone waste. The concept of this iconic building for the Technopark of Dubai, is a building which will reflect the state of Planet Earth in the current and future times. Planet Earth embodies the very essence of the ecosystem that we live in. This concept takes the planet’s ecosystem and interprets it as a Cybertecture building that mimics the forces of nature to produce a building that is wonder for people to visit, live and work in, and be a symbol of the power of Technology. This building, being the iconic symbol of the Technopark will be called ‘Technosphere’.

이 선구적인 신 개발 프로젝트는 -지구 온난화에 있어 중립적인(도움이 되지 않는)데다가 버려진 채로 방치되고 있는- 사막에 커뮤니티를 만들어내기 위해, 지속가능한 테크놀로지와 계획 원리를 실험하고 있다. 두바이 테크노파크(the Technopark of Dubai)에 세워지는 이 상징적인 건축물의 컨셉은 ‘지구의 현재와 미래를 투영한다’ 는 것이다. 지구는 우리가 살고 있는 생태계의 본질을 담고 있다. 이 건축물 컨셉은 자연의 힘을 모방하는 사이버텍쳐(Cybertecture: cyber와 architecture 의 합성어, 건축 디자인에 있어 IT기술이 결합되어 설계환경 각 부분에 사이버 기반의 솔루션을 통합하고 융화하는 새로운 방식의 건출설계 분야) 건축물로서 지구 생태계를 본받고 이해하는 것에 있다. 이 건축물은 테크노파크의 역사적인 상징물이 되어 ‘테크노스피어(Technosphere)’ 라고 불리게 될 것이다.

The Technosphere has several key technology systems and architectural spaces that will enable the building to generate a self breathing environment as well as generate electricity from solar power to supplement the energy needs of the building. An intelligently distributed array of sky gardens for offices and hotel not only gives a outdoor terrace advantage to the occupants but also provide passive solar shielding from the sun as well as natural green plantations to contribute oxygen to the environment in a sustainable way. Other systems such as water recycling minimises the use and wastages of water in this vast building.

테크노스피어는 태양 전지를 활용하여 건물에 필요한 에너지를 공급함과 더불어 공기조화면에서도 자급자족이 가능한, 여러 개의 핵심 기술 시스템과 건축 공간을 가지고 있다. 지능적으로 배분 정렬된 호텔과 오피스의 스카이 가든들은 옥외 테라스 사용자에게 좋은 전망이 되는 동시에 태양열을 자연적으로 차단해주는 효과(패시브 솔라 쉴딩), 나아가 지속적으로 산소를 공급할 수 있는 친환경적인 인공 숲 역할을 하게 된다. 다른 시스템들 예컨데, 물의 순환 시스템은 이 거대한 건물 안에서의 물 소비량을 최소화시킨다.

The Technosphere sits on the axis of the new city plan of Technopark, creating a symbolic termination of the axis as if its location is the genesis of the city. From this point, the city seems to grow, and deliberately, the Techosphere is awesome in its presence as the nucleus of the City.

테크노스피어는 테크노파크의 새로운 도시 계획 축 위에 세워진다. 애초부터 그곳에 있었던 것처럼 도시 축의 클라이막스를 장식하게 된다. 도시의 성장이 이곳에서 시작된 것 처럼, 천천히 테크노스피어가 이 도시의 핵으로 자리잡을 것이다.

What gave you the idea to make this video? /영상을 만들게 된 계기는?

The idea is based on a kind of parody about the former socialist building style combined with pop culture. They used to build whole cities where each house was designed identically to create cheap housing for workers. These blocks were so similar that in Soviet times, you could easily wake up at a friends place in another city and still feel like you are in your own flat (there is even a Russian film about it!). Even the furniture was the same. I grew up in such a suburb of Riga, which was part of the Soviet Union at that time. When I moved to East Berlin I was again living in such a “ghetto” as the cool kids used to call them. Walking through that part of Berlin, seeing all these square blocks one day gave me the idea that they actually look like Tetris stones. I thought, “Hmm, why don’t you make an animation of that?”

팝컬쳐가 결합된, 사회주의적이며 정형화된 건축 스타일에 대해 일종의 패러디를 하고 싶었다. 독특한 디자인의 주택들로 채워져 있던 도시에 노동자중심의 값싼 주거를 짓기 위해, 이 같은 건축양식이 사용되었고, 이렇게 만들어진 블럭들은 소비에트 연방 시절의 건물들 같다. 어느 아침, 다른 도시에 있는 친구 집에서 눈을 떴는데, 내 집과 다른 것이 없다고 느낄지도 모른다. 집 안의 가구마저 똑같으니 말이다. 나는 리가(구소련의 라트비아 공화국의 수도) 외곽 같은 곳에서 자랐다. 베를린 동부로 이사했을 때도 “게토(ghetto)” 라고 불릴만한 곳에서 살았다. 동네를 걷다보면 이 네모난 블럭들을 눈에 들어온다. 그리고 어느날 문득 이 건물들이 테트리스의 돌조각처럼 보였고, 애니메이션으로 만들어야겠다는 생각을 하게 되었다.

How did you make it? / 어떻게 만들어졌나?

Basically the animation consists of two parts: the sky time-lapse and the house with the background. I took a photo of the “block” building on the opposite side of the street out of my bedroom window. Then I had to rebuild the scenery in After Effects. To do that, I used Photoshop to cut out the shapes of the Tetris Stones and rebuild it with the 3D function of After Effects. So basically only the building and the Tetrisstones are 3D; all other elements are 2D images taken out of the source photo. The sky time-lapse is made with my DSLR. I took a photo every five seconds over the duration of three hours and compressed it to 1:21 min.

원래 애니메이션은 두 개의 파트로 이뤄졌다. : 저속촬영한 하늘과 적당한 배경 속의 집. 나는 내 침실 창문 너머로 맞은 편의 “블럭” 건물 사진을 찍었다. 그리고나서 애프터 이펙트에서 장면을 재구축했다. 포토샵을 활용하여 테트리스의 돌조각 모양을 만들고, 여기에 애프터이펙트의 3D 기능을 썼다. 그래서 기본적으로 빌딩과 테트리스 스톤만 3D이다. ; 나머지 다른 구성요소는 전부 사진에서 추출한 2D 이미지들이다. 저속 촬영한 하늘은 DSLR로 찍었는데, 3시간 이상을 5초 간격으로 찍어 1분 21초의 영상으로 만들었다.

Why do you think people are fascinated with Tetris? / 사람들이 테트리스에 중독된다고 생각하는 이유는?

Tetris is a synonym for pop culture like no other computer game, but it was also invented by the genius Russian engineer Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union in 1984. I think it reminds all of us of the beginning of digitalization; computers became faster and started to become a part of our daily lives. I remember getting a Gameboy with Tetris in 1991 and fighting with my brother about who can play first. Seriously, I was highly addicted! Sometimes our parents had to take away the Gameboy, which always ended in tears. My family was living in East Germany at this time which had just joined West Germany. It was the time of change, everybody was excited, keen to find a place in the new system. The German Unity is now exactly 20 years ago. Many things have changed but I think that Tetris will always remind people from all over the world of the early ’90s.

테트리스는 다른 컴퓨터 게임들과는 달리, 팝 컬쳐와 비슷하다. 테트리스는 1984년 소련의 천재 엔지니어, 알렉세이 파지트노프(Alexey Pajitnov)에 의해 개발되었다. 테트리스는 우리 모두에게 ‘디지털화의 시작’을 연상시킨다고 생각한다. 컴퓨터는 그 성능이 향상되면서 이제 우리 삶의 일부가 되어 가고 있다. 1991년 우리 형제에게 테트리스와 겜보이가 생겼을 때, 게임을 먼저 하려고 동생과 싸웠던 일이 기억난다. 당시 나는 이것에 중독되어 있었다. 부모님께 겜보이를 뺐기면 항상 울다가 끝났다.
우리 가족은 독일이 통일되던 때에 동독에 살고 있었다. 변화의 시대를 앞에 두고 모두가 흥분했고, 새로운 시스템 안에 적합한 장소를 찾길 열망했다. 독일이 통일된 후 정확히 20년이 지났다. 많은 것들이 바뀌었지만, 테트리스는 전세계의 사람들에게 90년대 초반을 떠올리도록 할 것이라고 생각한다.
