Studio Lawrence는 런던 디자인 미술관으로부터 컨퍼런스 룸의 소음을 줄여주고 반영구적인 벽걸이 형식의 오브제 개발을 요청받았고 Along These Lines는 이 때 만들어졌다.

독일산 원단으로 만들어진 2mm 두께의 펠트(모직이나 털을 압축하여 만든 천)는 12가지 색상과 피보나치 수열의 처음 다섯 숫자(1, 2, 3, 5, 8)를 기준으로 폭 200, 300, 500, 800mm 제품으로 구성되어 있다. 천은 매달기 쉽게 되어 있기 때문에 재배치하여 다양한 패턴을 연출할 수 있다.

양면 레일을 사용할 경우, 가정에서는 거실 파티션으로 활용할 수 있고 사무실에서는 작업공간이나 회의실을 분리시켜는 용도로 활용할 수 있다.

피보나치수열 [ Fibonacci sequence ] : 이탈리아의 수학자인 피보나치(E. Fibonacci)가 고안해 낸 수열로서 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21……와 같이 선행하는 두 가지 숫자의 합이 다음 합의 수치가 되는 특수한 수열로서 n항과 n+1항의 비율은 1:1.618 이 된다. 이 비율은 시각적으로 균형이 잡힌 감각을 부여하여 황금분할 또는 황금률이라고도 한다.

Along These Lines 의 디자인은 12가지 색상과 4가지 크기(폭)의 천으로 만들어지는데 총 48종류의 펠트를 배치 순서에 따라 다양한 스트라이프 패턴을 만들 수 있다는 점이 매력적이다. 게다가 이 모든 조합을 ‘피보나치 수열’ 이라는 수학 공식이 뒷받침하고 있다는 점에 믿음이 간다. 펠트의 차음성이 어느정도인지는 확인해봐야겠지만 소음을 줄이면서(청각적인 기능) 시각적인 데코레이션을 동시에 해결한다는 점은 이 제품의 큰 장점인 듯 싶다.

간소한 재료와 간편한 설치. 그럼에도 불구하고 다양한 연출이 가능한 벽걸이 흡음재, Along These Lines.

Along These Lines

Along These Lines was created when the London Design Museum approached Studio Lawrence to develop a semi-permanent wall hanging that reduced echo within their conference room.

Based on the Fibonacci sequence, Along These Lines comprises a system of vertical felt lanes suspended on a steel rail, creating beautiful wall coverings of any size that add soft volume to any space.

The 2mm thick felt is eco-friendly and sourced from Germany‘s leading supplier, reinforcing Studio Lawrence‘s belief in using only the highest quality European materials and manufacturing. Available in twelve colours, the lanes are cut in widths of the first five values of the Fibonacci sequence and run parallel. The lanes can be layered up to create texture and the easy-to-manage hanging system means the lanes can be rearranged, creating a constantly changing composition.

Using a double-sided rail, Along These Lines can also become a soft partition wall to divide living spaces within the home, to separate workplaces or to enclose a meeting-room table.

우크라이나, 키예프의 디자이너 Yurko Gutsulyak은 하루라는 시간의 가치, 인생의 의미를 탁상달력 안에 담았다.

달력의 한 페이지가 한 달이며 날짜수 만큼의 성냥이 붙어 있고 각 성냥마다 해당하는 날짜가 표시되어 있다. Yurko의 달력에서 하루는 성냥 한 개비인 셈이다. 한번 불 붙은 성냥을 다시 쓸 수 없듯 어제의 시간은 이미 과거로 남을 뿐 돌아오지 않는다. 한번 뿐인 오늘, 후회없는 내일을 위해 불꽃같이 타오르자!

열정, 에너지를 시각화하는데 성냥만큼 좋은 것이 또 있을까? 오늘 날짜가 새겨진 성냥에 불을 붙는 순간, 성냥불의 크기와 오늘 하루 내가 쏟은 열정을 견주어 보게 될 것이다.

Desktop calendar made of matches is a philosophy gift. It tells about life passing by and about energy of every day. Each page is a month and it looks like a comb made of matches that correspond to the days. The matches are real and the construction of the calendar is absolutely safe. Calendar is made of recycling paper with silkscreen print. Matches are dipped in a special chemical solution and covered with sulphur, striking surface stripes are applied on stand base.

재활용 종이 위에 실크스크린으로 제작되었으며 성냥은 특수화학처리 후 유황으로 덮어서 제작. 달력 스탠드의 하단과 바닥은 성냥갑의 마찰면에 해당하는 재질이 부착되어 있다.

스웨덴의 디자인 스튜디오 Humans since 1982는 24개의 아날로그 시계로 하나의 디지털 시계를 만들었다.

시간을 거스를 수 없듯, 모든 것이 아날로그에서 디지털로의 교체되고 있는 현실도 거부할 수 없는 흐름인가 보다. The clock clock은 마치 아날로그 매체가 디지털화되는 과정을 보여주고 있는 것 같다. 24개의 아날로그 시계는 커다란 디지털 시계의 부속품일 뿐, 이제 더 이상 시간을 가리키지 않는다. 디지털은 획일화, 집단화된다는 것을 의미하는지도 모르겠다.

PAPELA
Papela is a playful paper lamp. Crumple, squash and reshape it as you like. Papela is delivered as a paper ball, which by a simple set of actions transforms into a unique wrinkled lampshade. Its minimalist structure is created by thread stitches only, hand sewn out of a colored paper sheet. Papela is available in two different designs

장난감처럼 가지고 놀 수 있는 조명, Papela는 ‘종이로 만든 램프(Papela는 paper와 lamp 두 단어를 조합한 이름이다)’라는 뜻으로 구기고 찌그러뜨릴수록 독특한 전등갓이 만들어진다. ‘색 종이에 바느질’ 이것이 Papela 구조의 전부라는 점에서 이 종이조명을 우습게 볼 사람이 있을지 모르겠다. 하지만, 저멀리 바라만 보던 대상을 만질 수 있고 사랑(?)할 수 있게 해주었다는 점에서 Papela는 조명에 대한 새로운 생각을 담고 있다.

‘종이’ 라고 말하고 있는 전등갓의 재료는 Papela의 디자인에서 가장 주목해야 할 부분이다. 안전한 전등갓을 만들기 위해선 그 재료가 종이처럼 구겨지지만 뚫어지거나 찢어지지 않으면서 램프에서 나오는 열을 견뎌야 한다. 다시 말해, ‘종이조명’에 쓰인 종이가 그냥 종이일 수 없다는 얘기다. Papela에는 타이벡(Tyvek)이라는 재료가 쓰였다. 듀퐁(Dupont)사에서 개발한 것으로 고밀도 폴리에틸렌으로 만들어져 단열, 방수, 내구, 통기성이 뛰어나 건축, 의류, 인쇄, 의료 등 다양한 분야에서 활용되고 있다.

Papela를 디자인 한, Meirav Peled Barzilay는 종이와 같은 소재를 물색하던 중 Tyvek을 알게 되었고 이외에도 두 개의 신소재를 함께 시험했다고 한다. 종이 같으면서 종이와 다르게 만드는 것. Papela는 단순한 일상을 새롭게 재구성하고 있다.

콜로라도에 위치한 Koostik.com은 아이폰의 소리를 증폭시켜주는 어쿠스틱 도크(acoustic amplifying sound docks) 라인을 개발하였다. 어떤 전자장치도 없이(전원을 공급할 필요가 없이) 목재 울림통만을 이용하여 아이폰 스피커에서 나온 소리를 평균 15에서 20 데시벨(dB)까지 증폭시켜준다.

Koostik은 악기를 만드는 것과 비슷한 개념이 적용되었다. 예를 들면, 바이올린의 현에서 나온 소리가 목재 몸통을 통해 증폭되듯 Koostik의 디자인도 같은 원리라고 할 수 있다. 아이폰 스피커를 통해 흘러나온 소리는 Koostik을 통과하면서 자연스럽게 증폭된다. Koostik은 1년여의 개발과정을 거쳤으며 원목을 사용, 수공예 제작된다.

현재 아이폰용 제품을 생산하고 있으며 이 제품은 3G나 4G 모두에서 작동하며 가격은 90달러이다. 또, 비슷한 개념으로 아이패드용 제품을 개발 중인데, 스탠드와 증폭기를 통합하는 조금은 다른 방식이라고 한다.

Koostik.com, a Colorado based company, has introduced a line of acoustic amplifying sound docks for the iPhone. The devices, made of solid wood in walnut, cherry, and birdseye maple, channel sound from the iPhone’s speaker into specially designed acoustic amplifying chambers. Sounds are amplified an average of 15 to 20 decibals. A 10 decibal increase doubles the volume you hear. Because there is no power connection or any form of electronic boosting; the result is a truly green alternative to powered amplifiers- free volume!

The product has been in development for over a year according to designer Jim Simon. The company produced over 50 working prototypes of slightly different design before they arrived at a final version for production. The evolutionary process has resulted in a design that is both functional and beautiful. Each koostik is hand made by a single craftsman, in much the same way as a fine musical instrument.

The concept behind the koostik is similar to many instruments. In a violin, for example, sound vibration from the violin’s strings travels into and out of the wooden body of the violin and is greatly amplified in the process. The same principal is at work in the koostik design. In place of strings, sound vibration created by the iPhone speaker enters the wooden body, resonates internally, and exits the sound holes naturally amplified.

The company chose to manufacture the design in solid wood because of its intrinsic beauty and value. Currently, the company produces this design to work exclusively with the iPhone, and it works with all generations of the phone. A similar concept is in development for use with the iPad, using a slightly different approach to incorporate both a stand and acoustic amplification.
