The Dragonfly.MGX pendant light draws inspiration from the curved honeycomb structure of insect eyes and their optical qualities. The fascination for us lies within its complex three dimensional array of photoreceptor cells or in this case light emitting cells. 
Dragonfly.MGX is taking functional requirements like glare shielding and direct/indirect light into consideration. Therefore the skin is closed on the upper cells and gradually opens up towards the lower part to let more light pass through. It utilizes a standard size light bulb e.g. an energy saving ligh bulb E27, thus making it a fully functional pendant light.
Dragonfly.MGX is made in Epoxy and is produced with 3D printing technology. This process becomes more and more interesting for mass production. It is available in two colours – Terra Cotta and Amber. The diameter of the shade is 30cm and the height is 20cm.

On 7th May 2010 Dragonfly.MGX was introduced to the public at the furniture fair in Milan/Italy in Via Tortona 19 and at Light & Building in Frankfurt/Germany.

The Dragonfly.MGX 펜던트 램프는 벌집에서 영감을 얻어 디자인되었다. 에폭시 수지로 만들어진 조명은 마치 꿀이 한가득 담겨 있는 것 처럼 달콤한 빛을 담아내고 있다. 조명을 밑에서 올려다 본 사진(왼쪽 첫번째 사진)을 보면 알겠지만 실제 벌집처럼 아래 쪽으로 구멍이 나 있고 육각의 구멍 형태나 밑으로 내려올수록 구멍의 크기가 점진적으로 커진다는 점 등 디테일이 살아있다는 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 벌집에 대해 세심히 관찰한 결과가 입체적인 디자인과 디테일에서 읽혀진다.

에폭시 수지를 통해 반투과되어 번져나오는 황색 빛은 마치 달콤한 꿀을 한가득 담고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 조명 밑에서 입을 벌리고 누워 있으면 꿀이 떨어질 것 같은, 달콤함이 느껴지는 빛이다. 조명 밑에 벌 한마리 붙여두면 실감나는 컷이 될 것 같다.

제품은 적갈색과 호박색 두 가지가 있으며, 크기는 직경 30Cm, 높이 20Cm 이며 가격은 750유로(한화로 약 1백만원)이다.

Platform – Wertel, Oberfell

Platform was founded in 2007 by Gernot Oberfell (1975) and Jan Wertel (1976). Both studied Industrial Design in Stuttgart at the State Academy of Art and Design, a school which is based on the model of the Ulmer Schule and the Bauhaus.
Before their London based practice was formed they both worked several years for Ross Lovegrove Studio. During this time they designed for clients such as Artemide, Yamagiwa, Louis Poulsen, Moroso, Serralunga, Sony, VitrA/Turkey, Issey Miyake and Tag Heuer.

Their work ranges from furniture, lighting and industrial products to experimental research pieces.

Gernot Oberfell and Jan Wertel share a strong interest in new technologies and processes and at an early stage in their careers discovered the possibilities of computer aided design. Software is not just used as an everyday tool, but becomes through experimentation a source of inspiration, and helps discovering new and exciting form languages. Their work combines these experiments with the logic and beauty of organic forms and the reality of product design: the right use of materials, production processes and ergonomics.

The Dragonfly.MGX는 Platform이라는 디자인 스튜디오에서 만들었다. 2007년 대학 동기인 두 명의 청년이 설립한 플랫폼(Platform)는 신기술과 컴퓨터를 적극 활용한 디자인(CAD: Computer Aided Design)을 지향하는 디자인 스튜디오다. 플랫폼은 The Dragonfly.MGX 의 입체적인 디자인을 살리기 위해 3D 프린팅 기술을 사용하였는데, 컴퓨터 3D에서 디자인한 제품을 출력하듯이 프린팅 기기가 제품을 만들어내는 기술이다.

The Dragonfly.MGX 조명 디자인의 핵심은 대략 다음 세가지로 정리할 수 있을 것 같다.

1. 사물(벌집)에 대한 관찰과 감성(꿀)의 조화
2. 디자인 성격에 맞는 재료(에폭시) 선택
3. 신기술(3D 프린팅 기술) 활용

특히, 1번의 과정을 통해서 디자인은 다양한 은유적 표현이 가능해진다. KOZO 램프 리뷰(“양철 수도꼭지의 빛 한방울: The KOZO 램프“)에서 “빛 한방울” 이라고 표현한 것과 같다. 벌집의 형태를 관찰하는 것 만으로는 그 안에 꿀이 가득하다는 정보를 전달할 수 없다. 벌집은 ‘꿀’ 을 연상시키지만 형태만으론 표현이 불가능하기 때문이다. 이런 의미에서 Platform의 The Dragonfly.MGX는 형태 안에 감성을 넣었다고 볼 수 있고, 그 핵심인 빛은 꿀처럼 ‘달콤한 맛’ 과 연결되어 “달콤한 빛” 이라는 은유적인 표현이 만들어지게 된다.
